2023
Procrastination is the word of the day! As I write this paragraph on May 31, 2025, you can see that there have been ZERO staff updates since 2022 and Summer 2025 starts tomorrow! I was motivated to not be THREE years behind in staff updates if I didn't get this done before Session 1, 2025. With that being said, I really only have a bunch of photos for the 2023 and 2024 updates. I didn't write much stuff down as far as what actually took place each session these last 2 Summers, with only a few exceptions. What I will do, is write a sentence here and there, referencing the photos, as they trigger a memory.
Maybe I'll do better in Summer '25? Or maybe not. Time will tell.
Session 1, 2023 update
This was year #2 for us at the boy scout lodge. Lots of snow melted between end of April and the beginning of camp. People are already wondering if we’ll make it to the end. Shit weather on Friday. Rain, fog, some wind. Palmer closed after we set and salted the GS. Everybody bails for the magic mile for an hour or so of skiing. New this year is breakfast at Timberline in the Wy’East day lodge. Pretty good food. Famous freestyle skier, Alex Hall, posed for a photo with Matt Codal and Michael Czech. Little kid in Mike Carmazzi’s group tipped him on the last day by saying to Mike: “hey, you dropped this.” It was a wad of crumpled up cash! So very awesome.
This was the first summer, where we stopped serving breakfast at camp on the Monday-Friday ski days. Timberline's Wy'East kitchen were the breakfast providers. Kids still made or packed their lunches back at the camp lodge in the morning, and we did the normal dinner routine we've been doing since forever.
One of the original Magic Mile chairs.
Scotty Veenis on the hill!
Ski Patrol training day. Rough weather for those peeps.
Session 2, 2023 update
Wednesday super cold, frozen glacier and wind day. 2 kids slid into my skis and bags and my stuff went all the way to the midway road. Backpacks and kids that crashed were hurling down the mountain all day long. CIT Michael Czech broke his femur after a bad crash off a big jump. Reid and Emily visited camp.
Our camp logo sign has taken a beating over the years.
One of two giant storage bins on Mike's property, where we store the "stuff" during the 9 non-Summer months.
Session 3, 2023 update
Bergen and Tanner were masters in making breakfast burritos to take on the hill for lunch.....or 2nd breakfast.
Tamanawas Falls. The hike path has changed 3 times since 1986 due to landslides and erosion. Still, a very popular hike with several of the ski camps.
I've tried over and over to make this photo right side up. I have failed and I'm moving on with my life.
Feet so close together, it almost looks like a mono-ski.
When I was your age, we didn't bring electronic devices to the camp picnic.
2nd generation MHSSC coach. Bergen Rust, with her dad, John Rust.
Session 4, 2023 update
We had a power outage at the boy scout lodge on Tuesday. Video was cancelled. Last day to ski off the top of magic mile happened at end of this session. Snowboard girl landed hard on her neck, but only came away with a chipped tooth. Tanner had a poo-mergency on Palmer. Kim Jong Yung and son Benjamin skied this week. Black salt box buried last week was found. I won a $2 and $1 bet off of Syrovatka and Tanner.
That's "Party Beach ski camp" with the palm trees.
Dinner with 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist in Giant Slalom, Debbie Armstrong. The real Debbie Armstrong (not the wood version) does actually coach on the hill just about every Summer.
Did you ever ski the Marlboro dual GS coin-op race course? Some camper had this vintage t-shirt. Yep, Cigarette companies were sponsors back in the day.
Session 5, 2023 update
What movie are these flag shorts from? Bonus: which character actually wore them?
This is the Stadium Chair, over at Mt Hood Meadows. I go on a hike every Monday afternoon, so you'll be seeing lots of photos of my area hike adventures.
Again, another example of the inability to rotate a photo in this horrible excuse for a website software program.
A few senior photos of staffer Violet Kreilick
Session 6, 2023 update
Free Samples of Suja juice.
Former staffers, Bill Whalley and Scotty Veenis met up with Mike and Lynne
Session 7, 2023 update
Used car lot? This is the scene on Sundaysat the camp lodge for the weekly camp orientation. We have an alternate parking lot, but few people know it exists.
Camp vending machine. Yep, can't rotate this photo either! Just turn your head sideways to get the full effect.

Annual "Classic Car day" at Timberline Lodge
Session 11, 2023 update
US ski team legend, and Olympic Gold Medalist, Diann Roffe!
We were walking on and off the Palmer chairlift the final 2 days of Summer '23. Timberline had intended to close on Wednesday, which would have been 2 days short for our annual Adults-Only session, but they ran the lift for us to get us to the end.
Game Over!
